The family is starving, so their cruel stepmother convinces their father to abandon them in the woods so they starve to death. Then they stumble upon a witch's candy house, and she captures them with plans to eat them. Finally, Gretel pushes the wicked witch into a flaming oven, where she burns to a crisp. Yikes. But believe it or not, there are many good reasons to read fairy tales to kids – even the scary ones. I won't go into all the reasons here, but if you're curious, I recommend reading this post. All that said, I loved Hansel and Gretel as a kid, and so do my own kids. In fact, my Four recently illustrated her own version of the tale and then brought it to me – asking me to add the words that she supplied. "Ha ha ha ha ha ha! " (spoken in her version of a witch's cackle) "Now I am going to fatten you up! " So I hope you enjoy this list!

-What are they? -These are flints. If you strike them together, they make sparks to start a fire. They're a good gift. Keep them with you always, and you'll never be cold. Children, I told you to sit quietly while I finish my business here. This is the last bundle, sir. Taste and touch nothing or your father will pay for your curiosity. And the same goes for you. Sir, the wood basket's full. I'm putting these by the oven. Here's your money, woodcutter. Sir, this is not what we agreed upon. I don't have to deal with you at all. I could easily cut my own wood for my oven. I haven't the time, so you reap the benefits. Sir, the last time I brought you wood... you paid me too little, and you promised to pay me fairly this time. I think you're mistaken, woodcutter. I don't remember any such thing. Little girl. And for you... some delicious cookie crumbs. What do you say, Gretel? Thank you, Master baker, sir. You're very welcome, child. Come along, children. Red and yellow ribbons. Come see and come buy.

"You're still
much too thin! " she complained. When will you become plump? " One day the
witch grew tired of waiting. "Light the oven, "
she told Gretel. "We're going to have a tasty roasted boy today! " A little
later, hungry and impatient, she went on: "Run and see if the oven is hot
enough. " Gretel returned, whimpering: "I can't tell if it is hot enough
or not. " Angrily, the witch screamed at the little girl: "Useless child! All right, I'll see for myself. " But when the witch bent down to peer inside
the oven and check the heat, Gretel gave her a tremendous push and slammed
the oven door shut. The witch had come to a fit and proper end. Gretel
ran to set her brother free and they made quite sure that the oven door
was tightly shut behind the witch. Indeed, just to be on the safe side,
they fastened it firmly with a large padlock. Then they stayed for several
days to
eat some more of the house,
till they discovered amongst the witch's belongings, a huge chocolate egg. Inside lay a casket of gold coins.
