After taking the JLPT N5 and passing it I felt that this book leaves a lot to be desired. Like the exam (at least if you take it in Japan) all the instructions are in Japanese. But since this is the N5 level I felt that they really should go over the question formats and the goals better. For example the grammar question format with the star, on the test you only answer the star, but the test prep book doesn't tell you that, so I was slightly confused when I saw that same question format on the test. Also the vocabulary section does cover a majority of what you need, but I felt that it was missing a number of the works that ended up on the test. Really good Vocab and Kanji sections, probably my favorite for these! I will say the Grammar and Reading section isn't the best.

Please don't try to learn readings for kanji when you're starting out. Learn words. Readings are useless. Learning all the readings of kanji is like learning the rules of baseball by memorizing batting averages of players in 1979. In 10 years of study, you will absorb the readings. You need the words. For example, 右 should be associated with the word みぎ (right), not with the readings ゆう/う, which are just parts of larger words. Some kanji rarely appear by themselves, and you should learn the combinations of kanji that make up useful words.
