p. 73. Man's achievements rest upon the use of symbols.... we must consider ourselves as a symbolic, semantic class of life, and those who rule the symbols, rule us. p. 76. The word is not the thing. p. 222. Quotes about Alfred Korzybski [ edit]
"What is good in Korzybski's work, " they say, "is not new, and what is new is not good. " On the other hand, many "Korzybski-ites" proclaim that Korzybski's work has "nothing to do" with semantics. They go so far as to say that the very term "general semantics" was an unfortunate choice; that had Korzybski known what confusion would arise between semantics and general semantics he would not have used it at all. Korzybski himself has maintained that while semantics belongs to the philosophy of language and perhaps to the theory of knowledge, general semantics belongs to empirical science: that it is the foundation of a science of man, the basis of the first "non-aristotelian system, " which has had no predecessor and which no academic semanticist has ever achieved.

Once this occurs, your world will never be the same. If you want to better understand yourself and those around you, seriously consider reading this book. If you work as a scientist then every day you spend without having read it will be a waste. Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2013 Verified Purchase
I study mathematics and its applications, particularly physical applications. I read a little theology. I have poor patience for most other reading material. Too much of it seems to be content-free. This book is unlikely anything I've seen before. It's just stunningly insightful. It is one of the very few books I've gotten which has content at a satisfying density. That is, the author doesn't go on and on without saying something important. It is possible to observe that the writing can be repetitive, but I think the repetition is good for me. It emphasizes portions of the learning that I have to have a chance to observe. Although titled "general semantics, " a friend of mine correctly points out that this is really an epistemology.

I am another reader whose life was changed by reading this book. I tripped over this dense tome in my searching (half-crazed) teenage phase of life. I think that is the only explanation for how I was able to slough through it. If I had first come across this today there is no way I would give it the time. Someone needs to do a condensed 200 page version. A copy has travelled with me in my life helping me to joyfully reach 56 years of age. Each time I think about a problem in my life or in the wo..
"Science and Sanity" is perhaps the book that has had the most influence on my thinking. Korzybski's insight into the importance of language/semantics/reasoning is without equal. That said, it is the one of the most difficult-to-read books I have ever run across. This stems from two principle problems. The first is that the author is not a native speaker of English.

Applicable to every moment of waking life... This text is the hands down best text i have read in a very long time. I have read this book a total of 3 times now in my life, and it has helped refine my own speech and text patterns over the years greatly. Excellent no matter if it is the first time, or the third time. Enjoy! Special book my science teacher gave me and always reading for good times. I keep a print xeroxed next to my bed-top: I stare it every night: I've blazed it ever since I saw! My top-of-the-list...
Korzybski tells us talking crazy makes us crazy. Therefore talk sane, be sane. Sane speak will actually heal your nervous system. Sane speak is less in certainties and more in abstractions. Crazy speak is. Sane speak seems. This magnum opus could be taught to 2 year old children - the result would be a radically different world from that which we now know. It is said that some think and speak in ways which change the world. That hypothetical speculation simply must include Korzybski.
