If the steel alloy includes aluminum, chrome, and molybdenum, it enhances nitriding and hardness can be obtained. A representative nitride steel is SACM645 (Aluminum chromium molybdenum steel). Related article – Heat treatment of gears (Carburizing, Induction hardening, Nitriding)
When mating gears transmit power, both tooth flanks are in sliding contact and rolling contact. In other words, the pressure which the tooth flank get is same as the pressure when a cylinder slides while rolling on a flat surface. The tooth flank needs to have durability against such pressure. However, some rigid materials such as ceramic are vulnerable to impacts and break easily. Bending force is frequently applied to the dedendum and impact may be generated when gears start moving. The material of gear needs to be tenacious in order to achieve high durability against external forces and impact. Therefore, gears need to be hard on the outside and tenacious inside just like a Japanese sword. Heat treating is the method to give such characteristics.

Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture by J. R. Davis English | 30 Sept. 2005 | ISBN: 0871708159 | 339 Pages | PDF | 15 MB All of the critical technical aspects of gear materials technology are addressed in this reference work. Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture is intended for gear metallurgists and materials specialists, manufacturing engineers, lubrication technologists, and analysts concerned with gear failures who seek a better understanding of gear performance and gear life. This volume complements other gear texts that emphasize the design, geometry, and theory of gears. The coverage begins with an overview of the various types of gears used, important gear terminology, applied stresses and strength requirements associated with gears, and lubrication and wear. This is followed by in-depth treatment of metallic (ferrous and nonferrous alloys) and plastic gear materials. Emphasis is on the properties of carburized steels, the material of choice for high-performance power transmission gearing.
Gear manufacturing refers to the making of gears. Gears can be manufactured by a variety of processes, including casting, forging, extrusion, powder metallurgy, and blanking. As a general rule, however, machining is applied to achieve the final dimensions, shape and surface finish in the gear. The initial operations that produce a semifinishing part ready for gear machining as referred to as blanking operations; the starting product in gear machining is called a gear blank. [1]
Selection of materials [ edit]
The gear material should have the following properties: [2]
High tensile strength to prevent failure against static loads
High endurance strength to withstand dynamic loads
Low coefficient of friction
Good manufacturability
Gear manufacturing processes [ edit]
There are multiple ways in which gear blanks can be shaped through the cutting and finishing processes. Gear forming [ edit]
In gear form cutting, the cutting edge of the cutting tool has a shape identical with the shape of the space between the gear teeth.
Gear Material Steels for Industrial Gearing | Engineers Edge | www.engineersedge.com
Steel is the most common material overall, although over the years, we've worked with all of the material types mentioned. Steel is often most desirable because it offers a winning combination of high strength-to-weight ratio, high resistance to wear, the ability to enhance the physical properties through heat treatment, and competitive pricing.
