History Requirements (State of Georgia Legislative Requirements)
If you require any of the Legislative Exams, please email. The Legislative Exams will be administered remotely for the remainder of the Fall 2020 semester. Any student who is not able to take the exam remotely due to limited resources and/or the inability to access required resources should contact Testing Services for assistance. Students must satisfy the Georgia legislative requisites of demonstrating proficiency in United States and Georgia history. Students must meet the United States and Georgia history requirement in one of the following ways:
Successfully completing History 2111 or History 2112 at Middle Georgia State University, OR
Transferring in an equivalent course from a University System institution, which designates that course as fulfilling the history requirement, OR
Transferring in an equivalent course from a private institution in Georgia, whose catalog specifically indicates that the course satisfies the Georgia legislative history requirement.
Coleman's studies were interrupted during World War II (1941-45), when he served as an army officer in Europe. He completed his doctorate in 1953 at the University of Wisconsin, where Coulter had received his graduate training. Coleman worked briefly for the U. S. Forest Service and in 1949 began his teaching career in earnest at Georgia State University, which was then the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia. He was offered positions elsewhere in the University System but held out for a chance to teach in Athens. In 1955 he was appointed to the history faculty at the University of Georgia and moved to Athens with both of his parents, whom he continued to care for until their deaths. Coleman was a prolific writer. His major work, The American Revolution in Georgia (1958), which was the outgrowth of his Ph. D. dissertation, remains the standard general academic view of that period in Georgia history. Coleman's other works include Georgia Journeys (with Sarah Temple, 1961), Confederate Athens (1967), and Colonial Georgia (1976).
